Day 12

Rainy Florence

We woke up refreshed today, but it was still raining. We went to see about getting into the Uffizi, and successfully booked some tickets for the day after tomorrow. For today, we will escape the rain by visiting the Galleria dell’Accademia, where the original David is on display (among many other works).

But, first, we sat and watched the rain with some coffee from the shelter of a cafe in the Piazza della Signoria.

Rainy Florence

The umbrellas are in full force on this rainy day in Florence.

Michelangelo’s David is the most famous statue in the world. It was commissioned in 1501 and was on display outside the Palazzo Vecchio in the Piazza della Signoria until 1873, when it was put inside the museum.

After the museum and a wonderful three-course lunch at Trattoria Mario, we took a break and escaped the rain.

In the evening, the rain finally blew out of Florence and the skies began to clear. We had a great dinner at Osteria di Benci and wandered the streets.
